Guyana Independence

On May 26, Guyana marks its independence from British colonial rule in 1966. This day is celebrated annually as a national holiday throughout the country. The road to independence was challenging for Guyanese people who faced struggles and oppression under British colonization.

Guyana’s fight for independence began in the early 1900s when leaders like Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow and Cheddi Jagan challenged British rule. However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that the push for self-governance gained momentum with increasing protests, strikes, and boycotts of British goods. Finally, Guyana became independent on May 26, 1966, after years of negotiations between political leaders and British officials.

Today, Guyanese people celebrate their freedom with parades, cultural events, and flag-raising ceremonies.
